A POCA Tech student noted recently that one of the things they like about the school and WCA is the multi-generational aspect of the community. We’ve always had a wide range of ages and perspectives and I love that. Which is just to say, an animated video post is not something that I would’ve tackled on my own but I’m sharing one with you thanks to the hard work and creativity of one of our Gen Z contributors, Nika Jagel.
Nika is a Bennington College student who did a field study internship at WCA earlier this year. Nika’s interests include community organizing and alternatives to the current healthcare model. Over the two hundred hours they were with us, they contributed to WCA in all kinds of ways including being an on-call receptionist at WCA Cully (so helpful!) and documenting some of our emerging job descriptions and work flows. (WCA is always under construction, usually without a blueprint.) We had never tried hosting an intern in this way but having Nika around was delightful.
Nika was also particularly interested in how WCA enacts trauma-informed care1. As part of their internship, they created this lovely, heartfelt ten-minute video for us. We so appreciate having these kinds of resources for staff, volunteers, students, and 5NP advocates. I hope you enjoy Nika’s work. (Note: the video might start out muted so you just have to un-mute it.)
And a quick 5NP update: HB 2143A is on the schedule for today in the Oregon Senate.
