Sometimes people speculate about what the community acupuncture model might have to offer beyond affordable acupuncture treatments. Thanks to subscribers James Lorr and Catalina Alzate — who are, respectively, a long-time community acupuncturist in Urbana IL and a professor of graphic design at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign — we have a beautifully detailed answer to that question, in the form of a video.
As part of a Service Design class, Catalina’s students took a field trip to James’ clinic, Urbana Acupuncture, and used what they learned there as part of their final project. The video describes what they got out of the trip and how they subsequently designed services that center community and rest and promote students’ well-being. I loved seeing a community acupuncture clinic from the students’ perspective and hearing Catalina’s analysis of what makes community acupuncture clinics impactful — and I hope you do too.

Big thanks to Catalina, James, and the students for sharing their work — it’s the best kind of evidence that acupuncture can indeed change the world.
